Greene County Guide to Eating and Drinking in the Catskills

Updated: Mar 30, 2023

November is a unique time in the Catskills. The blazin’ foliage is beginning to fade, the air starts to have a crisper bite, but it’s not quite time to break out the skis and hit up the slopes at Hunter Mountain. Perfect time, instead, to kick back and relax at some of the coziest (and yummiest!) drinking and dining spots in the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County.

Leeds

First stop has to be Gracie’s Luncheonette. Don’t let the name fool you, this spot is perfect for any meal of the day with views overlooking a nearby stream. Can’t go wrong with ordering, except if you don’t save room for one of their homemade donuts.

What people are saying:

“Hidden gem right off the highway!”

“They do all their own smoking, make their own soda and ketchup, and make the most outrageous donuts ever.”

“The food is delicious and the wait staff are super nice and accommodating. Food is extremely fresh. Our waiter showed us the list of allergens which was helpful.”

Cairo

Look no further than Old Factory Brewing Company for some good ol’ fashioned burgers and beer. The complementary popcorn doesn’t hurt either, right?

What people are saying…

“You must try their specialty nights. $3 Taco Thursday is delicious! The reuben egg rolls with thousand island sauces are so good. $6 Burger nights includes their delicious homemade fries.”

“The most friendly staff! We often come here after skiing at Windham or hiking in the Catskills. The smash burgers are really flavorful and the wings are perfect. I’m usually a bleu cheese fan, but their ranch is the way to go. Fries are seasoned well. They have plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options as well as plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) and a large selection of beer, wine, and cocktails. Dog friendly.”

Catskill

Fresh and fantastic is what you’ll hear the crowds say about the tiny, but mighty, Mermaid Cafe. Just named Best of Greene County Dine In Restaurant from Hudson Valley Magazine Polls. Order at the counter and they’ll bring the food to the table!

What people are saying…

“Unique place with charm. Serves burritos, tacos, ramen, nachos, poke bowls. Oddly enough, the concept works. Food was good and fresh.”

“Lovely lil’ spot in a lovely lil’ town. Food wasn’t quick but it shouldn’t have to be, especially because it was so fresh! Full of flavor and yummy goodness. Love the decor too!”

Subversive Brewing is a go to November spot with outdoor fire pits and wood stoves, allowing everyone to enjoy the crisp air and coziness all at the same time. A dog and family friendly spot as well!

What people are saying…

“Subversive has served up an impressive array of beer styles for awhile, but it’s their new kitchen’s offerings that have brought me back a few times in the months since it opened.”

“They make their own malt on site, which gives further character to the beer.”

“Subversive is brewing some of the most exquisite beer in the greater Hudson Valley/Catskills. They are true artisans who care deeply and passionately about what they do.”

Avalon Lounge and The Bar at Captain Kidd’s Inn are two picks offering unique vibes and an opportunity for late night billiards. Cozy quarters with delectable Korean staples and a side of live music or a tiki, pirate dive bar with $1 pool? We recommend you make time for both.

What people are saying…

“Food is amazing at Avalon Lounge. Still dreaming of the dumplings and scallion pancake. Ambiance is cozy, easy to spend hours chatting amongst friends.”

“Awesome everything...mid century eclectic vibe, delish authentic Korean cuisine made fresh from quality ingredients, excellent sound in the performance space and solid beer wine and soju options...what's not to love?”

“Captain Kidd’s is a great place to catch up with friends or have an interesting conversation with the bar staff. This is definitely one of the hidden gems of the city and I recommend anyone to visit at any season. It's one of the few places in the world where you can still pay $1 to play pool.”

“Unpretentious dive bar that has a vibe all its own with a strong pirate vibe, pool table, jukebox, and an outdoor tiki bar. Bartenders are super personable. Can’t wait to go back!”

Tannersville & Hunter

Last Chance Cheese and Antique Cafe has been open for over 50 years and is the perfect spot to grab some food and drink after a nice hike in the surrounding area. Don’t miss out on the French Onion Soup!

What people are saying…

“A much needed beer, charcuterie board and meal after a long hike in the rain. Staff is awesome. Epic beer list. Good menu, choices for everyone, local cheese from NY, VT and surrounding areas. Antiques are on the wall and hanging from the ceiling, everything has a price tag. Next time I'm in town, we’ll be back. Thank you.”

Delicious selections from Last Chance and Jagerberg!

Look no further than Jagerberg Beer Hall and Tavern for authentic German fare in the mountains. Sleek ambiance on the main floor with a mountain lodge feel upstairs. We hear the warm raclette cheese appetizer and chicken schnitzel can’t be beat!

What people are saying…

“We went on a whim for Sunday brunch while we were in Hunter Mountain. What I had was one of the best culinary experiences of my life. The food , the atmosphere, the service and even the music was beyond. Diamond in the rough. If you’re up there, just go.”

Windham

Old School Italian, here we come. From the ambiance, to the friendly waitstaff, to the reasonable prices, Brandywine is the way to go if you’re looking for Italian in the Windham area. Not to mention they have vegan and gluten free options as well.

What people are saying…

“I hate giving this place a good rating because I like it the way it is and don’t need huge waits BUT….. you can’t beat it. As far as Windham is concerned, Bradywine is the most consistent , reasonably priced and relaxing restaurant.”

Not only is the unique wine selection and ambiance special, but on Tuesdays, Ze Windham Wine Bar’s owner and mountain top Sommelier, Cordelia, also offers different themed wine school classes!

What people are saying…

“Everything about this place is perfection, the wine, the food, the atmosphere, everything is done with the utmost care and class.”

“Their wine list is extensive and their cheese selections are wonderfully unique (I’m still thinking about that Artigiano ❤️). Once the crowd cleared, Cordelia, the Sommelier, came and sat with us for a while. It was so wonderful to be able to chat with her, she is so friendly that I felt like we were old friends catching up. I definitely plan to come back!”
